At Markdown It, we take your privacy seriously. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information when you use our Chrome extension.
Markdown It does not collect, transmit, or store any of your data on our servers. All processing happens locally on your device.
Information We Collect
Markdown It operates completely locally on your device. We have designed this extension with privacy as a core principle:
- No data is ever sent to our servers or any third parties
- No personal information is collected, not even anonymously
- No analytics or tracking is implemented in the extension
- No browsing history is collected or monitored
The only data stored is your most recent markdown conversion, which is saved locally in your browser using Chrome's storage API. This allows you to quickly access your last conversion through the extension popup.
How We Use Your Information
Since all data is stored exclusively on your local device, we only use it to:
- Convert the current webpage to Markdown format
- Display your last conversion in the extension popup
- Copy the converted Markdown to your clipboard when requested
- Enable download of Markdown as a .md file
No information ever leaves your device. All HTML to Markdown conversion happens locally within your browser using the Turndown.js library.
Chrome Permissions Explained
Our extension requires the following permissions to function:
activeTab
Purpose: Allows reading the HTML content of the current webpage you want to convert to Markdown.
Data Access: Only the current active tab's content, and only when you explicitly click to convert.
contextMenus
Purpose: Adds right-click menu options like "Copy Page as Markdown" and "Copy Selection as Markdown".
Data Access: No data access. This permission only allows us to add menu items.
clipboardWrite
Purpose: Enables copying the converted Markdown directly to your clipboard for immediate pasting.
Data Access: Can only write to clipboard, cannot read from it.
storage
Purpose: Stores only your most recent markdown conversion locally in your browser for quick access via the popup.
Data Stored: Markdown text, page title, page URL, and conversion timestamp.
Storage Location: Chrome's local storage API on your device. This data never leaves your computer.
Data Security
Since all data is stored locally on your device using Chrome's built-in storage mechanisms, security is managed by your browser. Your data is subject to Chrome's security model, which isolates extension data from other extensions and websites.
If you use Chrome's sync feature, your extension data (your last conversion) may be synced across your devices according to Chrome's sync settings and privacy policy. This synchronization process is handled entirely by Chrome, not by Markdown It.
Third-Party Services
Markdown It does not use any third-party services.
- No analytics services (Google Analytics, Mixpanel, etc.)
- No crash reporting services
- No advertising networks
- No external APIs or servers
All code runs locally in your browser. The extension is completely self-contained.
Data Deletion
You can delete your data at any time:
- Clear extension data: Go to
chrome://settings/clearBrowserData, select "Cookies and other site data", and check "Hosted app data" to clear extension storage. - Uninstall extension: Right-click the extension icon and select "Remove from Chrome". This immediately deletes all locally stored data.
Since no data is stored on our servers, removing the extension or clearing browser data completely removes all traces of Markdown It data from your device.
Children's Privacy
Markdown It does not knowingly collect any information from children under the age of 13. The extension does not collect any personal information from anyone, regardless of age.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date at the top.
You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes. Changes to this Privacy Policy are effective when they are posted on this page.
